In the cultural model of the city of Salzburg it was noted that the cultural life section, which has been developed by a variety of institutions and cultural practitioners of the visual arts to a high level, is to be expanded. In addition to the internationally positioned Museum of Modern Art on Mönchsberg, the Rupertinum, the Festspielen (festivals) at Easter, Whitsun and summer as well as various festivals outside of the traditional sector, the visual arts is increasingly in the limelight, not only in the high density of private galleries. Specifically, contemporary art forms available to the public in representative locations, is an important factor in cultural life. New locations include Galerie der Stadt Salzburg (Gallery of the City of Salzburg) and Galerie Fotohof (Gallery Fotohof) (Areal Stadtwerke) and Galerie 5020 (Art Quarter on Bergstraße). The city of Salzburg is also involved in the preservation of historic buildings, such as the refurbishment of the Künstlerhaus Kunstverein (Art house) and the Berchtoldvilla (Professional Association of Visual Artists). The advancement of young artists is also promoted through the workshops of the city of Salzburg. (Atelier Berchtoldvilla, Atelier Ignaz-Harrer-Straße).

A guest studio is also a part of the Künstlerhaus. The well-established exchange program situated here, allows Salzburg artists to work abroad and gain experience.
