Research stays and Science- and Literature Stipends 

Since 2006 the Department of Culture and Education of the city of Salzburg, has run a scientists-in-residence program in which Scientists and Literati from the whole world, can participate.  The program supports university and non-university research establishments in the city of Salzburg; international professionals in science and young interested scientists are invited to work together on research projects and events.  In honour of outstanding personalities, Salzburg will designate stipends for the scientist’s stay in the city.  The program is not only to give the possibility of working in Salzburg to renowned scientists, but also for resident scientific enterprises to profit from this networking and for interested persons to be invited onto this yearly program of integration.  The city positions itself strongly as a “City of cultural variety, openness and quality with an interlaced and dynamic cultural, educational and science scene” as is formulated in the city as culture leader.

This means that the city of Salzburg offers foreign scientists the possibility of living and working in Salzburg for 1 to 3 months.  The city has made available a renovated and fully equipped apartment in the close proximity of the old town.  Apart from the free living possibility, stipends are also offered; the stay in Salzburg is not subject to any social criteria.

Application:  The program is open to scientists who plan a co-operation with a research establishment in the city of Salzburg.  Besides stipends, which will be written out in each case in the year preceding the planned stay, there is also the possibility of putting a Salzburg project idea into motion.  The selection of applicant lies within the Department of Culture and Education of the city of Salzburg in co-operation with various scientific enterprises.  Interested scientists should send a meaningful application with a personal record and data detailing previous scientific activities, a reason for the application and a project idea to the Department of Culture and Education of the city of Salzburg.

Robert Jungk-Research Stipend
In memory of the forward thinking researcher Robert Jungk, the city of Salzburg awards the Robert Jungk Stipend for forward thinking research, once a year. People working in forward thinking research or future relevant research scientific tasks, can apply.  Besides the living possibility and stipend, there is also the possibility of working in the Robert-Jungk-Library for Future Questions (JBZ) and other scientific establishments in Salzburg for a minimum of 8 weeks within a given period. 

The selection takes place via the Department of Culture and Education on the suggestion of the Board of Trustees of the Robert-Jungk-Foundation.

Stefan Zweig-Research Stipend
In memory of Stefan Zweig the city of Salzburg, in co-operation with the Stefan Zweig Centre, awards the Stefan Zweig Stipend once a year.  People either involved in research projects with a direct connection to Stefan Zweig or who have yearly work with the Stefan Zweig Centre, are welcome to apply.  As well as the living possibility and stipend it is necessary to work with the Stefan Zweig Centre.

The selection takes place via the Department of Culture and Education on the suggestion of the Stefan Zweig Centre.

Stipend for gender-studies
In co-operation with gendup – Centre for Gender Studies and Woman Promotion at the University of Salzburg, a yearly stipend is awarded by the city of Salzburg to an internationally renowned scientist whose main point of research is gender studies.  Besides the living possibility and stipend, a working co-operation with gendup – Centre, in the form of a lecture at the University, is necessary. 

The selection takes place via the Department of Culture and Education on the suggestion of gendup – Centre for Gender Studies and Woman Promotion at the University of Salzburg.

Art-scientific Research Stipend in exchange with the city of Dresden
In co-operation with the German city Dresden, a two-month research stipend is awarded which enables a Salzburg scientist a stay in Dresden and a Dresden scientist a stay in Salzburg.  A condition in each case is a city relevant research project.  With the stipend, a living and working possibility is awarded.

The selection takes place in Dresden and Salzburg with a co-operation between the Culture department and University.

H.C. Artmann-Literature Stipend
In memory of the poet and language artist H. C. Artmann, the city of Salzburg in co-operation with the Literature House in Salzburg, awards the H. C. Artmann Literature Stipend once a year, for a period of 2 – 3 months a year. 

Applicants are German speaking authors who are able to put forward present thoughts and opinions poetically and through their artistic independence, innovative ability and authenticity, be distinguished.

Besides the living possibility and stipend, a working co-operation with the Literature House in Salzburg is necessary.  The selection takes place via the Department of Culture and Education on the suggestion of the Literature House in Salzburg.

The apartment Tobias
In the context of the scientists-in-residence-program of the city of Salzburg, in which the city co-operates closely with Salzburg research establishments, an apartment is available for foreign scientists, in the close proximity of the old town.  The apartment is situated in the area of Riedenburg, is approximately 35 m², is fully furnished and offers working and living possibilities.  The maximum duration of stay – after confirmation - in apartment “Tobias” is between 1 and 3 months.
