1000 Artists’ Books / The Book as Art Quarry Books 2012

"The books I create combine written and visual language to explore the significance of human interaction with the natural world. Ultimately, my work is about forging a stronger bond with the earth and finding a connection to place. It’s about paying attention – to a single moment, a thought, an impression, an experience. It’s what the photographer Paul Caponigro describes as “sensing the thread which holds all things together.

While in residency, I will be working on two book projects. The first is a photo essay on the experience of the residency in Salzburg. While in Salzburg, I will complete all photography and layout design. Printing and binding will be done when I return to the states. Both the city of Salzburg and the Anderson Center in Red Wing will receive two copies of the book when completed.

The second book is for my current year-long Jerome fellowship. I am creating a series of mixed media (screenprint, graphite, collage, letterpress) prints. The prints can be viewed individually as separate pages of the book, or displayed together in a specific configuration that forms a single panoramic landscape image with adjacent text. Each set of prints will be housed in a clamshell box. While in residency I will concentrate on pages with graphite drawing and collage elements. I hope to take some inspiration from the landscape around the city of Salzburg."
